This is part of the Year of Ireland and Irish Heritage program, at Rheinhardt University.

Abstract: Irish native and longtime host of WRFG Atlanta's "The Celtic Show" John C. Falstaff presents a 60 minute historical tour of the traditional music of Ireland, both on its home turf and throughout the diaspora. From the 1940s and 1950s origins of the Clancy Brothers and the Chieftains to the 1990s sensation of Riverdance and beyond, it's a story that spans much of the globe, overlaps with country and bluegrass, and has influenced artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, the Metallica.

Besides his almost encyclopedic knowledge of traditional Irish music in relation to developments throughout the world in folk music and related arts, John C. Falstaff is an articulate and impassioned spokesperson on the subject. In classes of mine, he has delivered deeply informative, comprehensive and well-organized presentations on major developments in the field over the last twenty-five or thirty years. Combining an unusually broad historical understanding with discriminating taste, Falstaff is one of the most trustworthy guides to what's really important in traditional Irish music and Celtic music in general.
